Some people say that Damon sees Elena as Katherine because he can’t have Katherine and he still wants Katherine. That can’t be further from the truth. Can I just say that is a bunch of total bullshit? If you actually watched the show and Damon’s actions then you would see that he does in fact LOVE Stefan and has even chosen him over Elena MANY times and has put Stefan before his own happiness.
For example the scene in 2x08. That was by far the most selfless thing Damon has ever done and he most definitely chose Stefan in that scene....
