It’s funny…how Stefan, the good, selfless one is the most selfish when it comes to Elena and Damon, the evil, selfish brother who could care less about his brother is the most selfless.

S2: “I love you Elena, and it’s because I love you, I can’t be selfish with you. I don’t deserve you, but my brother does.”

Damon’s heart was breaking all throughout that season. He wanted to be with Elena so badly but he just couldn’t do that to his brother. He couldn’t take away the one thing that made his brother happy. Flashback to season 1: “I like you, you know how to laugh. And you make Stefan smile which is something I haven’t seen in a very long time.” even though he set out to make his brother’s life a living hell, he still, deep down, wants Stefan to be happy. And let’s not forget that all through season 3 he was trying to bring Stefan back to Elena and get him away from Klaus. He even offered HIMSELF up to go out on the run with him because he knew that his brother wouldn’t be able to handle the guilt after he caused so much pain to his loved ones. Damon = selfless brother.

Now let’s look at Stefan.

All throughout this show Stefan has bad mouthed his brother to Elena. He had his reasons to do so in S1, but it should have stopped by S2. He had no reason to bring Damon’s character down, especially in season 3. Damon has done nothing but protect STEFAN’S GIRL, he has nearly got himself killed guarding her life while also trying to keep Elena’s image of Stefan perfectly intact. Throughout all of this Damon’s reward for protecting Elena and being the better man is, “She’s sure as hell better off without you.”

I cannot fathom for the life of me how Stefan can say that to the person who has been keeping Elena, the woman who he loves, alive. It’s just sad that when Stefan protects Elena he’s deserving of her but when Damon does the same thing he isn’t.

Just a side note, just because Stefan was with Elena first doesn’t mean that Stefan is right for her. After everything he’s done this season it’s Damon who should be worthy of her.

It breaks my heart, and makes me hate the DS relationship even more.
